I am an Associate Professor of Journalism at Sogang University’s School of Communication. My research focuses on how journalism is evolving in a globalizing world, and how news institutions and journalists are responding to this evolution. I have published in journals such as New Media & Society, International Journal of Press/Politics, Journalism Studies, Journalism Practice, and Journalism: Theory, Practice and Criticism. I have also written book chapters on digital journalism ethics and journalism education. My research has received top prizes at ICA and AEJMC annual conferences.
I am the co-editor of a forthcoming volume on communication research on North Korea, titled Locating North Korea in communication research. I am also working on a monograph on the evolution of digital news practices and news institutions globally. My research is not only comparative in nature but also historical. One major thread of my current research involves North Korea. In 2020 I was the co-editor of a special issue of International Journal of Communication on North Korea and communication.
In my past life I was an award-winning journalist for print and broadcast outlets including BBC Radio, Straits Times, Korea Times, and the Hankyoreh, a progressive newspaper founded by 67,000 citizens in South Korea. I reported from North Korea and covered conflicts in Darfur, Niger Delta and northern Sri Lanka. I attended Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism, Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Public Policy, and Seoul National University.
